BACKFACES

The series ‘Backfaces’ represents an important turning point in the artistic practice of Els Bijnens.

Bijnens leaves her rather academic approach of painting when she receives a number of discarded canvases from her teacher. A coincidental gift that lead to a serie of works in which Bijnens developed her own signature in contemporary art. She resolutely opted for a more experimental and spatial subsurface of the canvas.
